Crop image

Drag a box over your picture and save the part inside it. Crop freely, lock a ratio such as 1:1 or 16:9, type an exact box in pixels, or cut a round profile picture.

How to crop a picture

  1. Add your picture. Drop it anywhere on the page, paste it, or click the box to choose a file. JPEG, PNG, WebP and, with a small extra download, iPhone HEIC photos all work.
  2. Shape the box. Drag the box to move it, drag a square on its edge or corner to resize it, or drag on the picture outside the box to draw a new one. The dark area is what will be cut away.
  3. Pick a shape under Shape of the box if you need a fixed ratio, or leave it on Free.
  4. Press Save the cropped picture. The file is named after your picture with -cropped added, for example holiday-cropped.jpg.

Everything inside the box is saved at its original pixel size. The tool crops; it does not resize. To change the size afterward, use the image resizer, or the bulk image resizer to crop and resize a whole folder to one exact size.

Ratios

Shape of the box locks the box to a ratio, and it stays locked while you drag a corner or an edge. The choices are:

ChoiceTypical use
FreeCut out any part. No ratio is kept.
Same as the pictureZoom in on a part while keeping the picture's own shape.
1 : 1Square posts and profile pictures.
4 : 5Portrait posts on social feeds.
16 : 9Widescreen: video thumbnails, banners and slides.
9 : 16Vertical video covers and stories.
3 : 2 and 2 : 3The shape of photos from many cameras, landscape and portrait.
4 : 3 and 3 : 4The shape of many phone photos, and of older screens.
CustomAny ratio you type, such as 5 : 2.

When you pick a ratio, the box shrinks to the largest box of that shape that fits inside the box you already had, around the same center, so you do not lose your place.

A circle for profile pictures

Choose Circle (round picture) next to the shape. The box becomes a circle that stays a perfect circle as you resize it, and the corners outside it are saved see-through. Because JPEG cannot be see-through, a circle is saved as a PNG (or a WebP if you choose it), and the page says so. Profile picture uploads usually crop to a circle themselves, so this is most useful when you want the round shape in the file, for a logo, a sticker or a presentation.

An exact box in pixels

Below the picture, Left, Top, Width and Height show the box in the pixels of your original picture, even when the picture is shown smaller on screen. Type new numbers to place it exactly, for example a 1080 × 1080 box at 200 pixels from the left. With a ratio locked, changing the width sets the height, and the other way round. Center the box puts it in the middle of the picture, and Reset the box brings back the starting box, which covers 80% of the picture.

Moving the box with the keyboard

Click the picture area so that it has focus, then use the arrow keys to move the box one pixel at a time, or ten pixels with Shift held down. That helps when you need to line up a crop exactly, and it works without a mouse. On a touch screen, the squares on the box are larger so that a finger can grab them.

File type and quality

  • Same type as the original saves JPEG as JPEG, PNG as PNG and WebP as WebP. HEIC photos become JPEG, and other types such as GIF or BMP become PNG.
  • PNG is lossless and keeps transparency. JPEG is smaller for photos and fills see-through areas with white. WebP is usually the smallest and keeps transparency.
  • Quality for JPEG and WebP runs from 50 to 100 and starts at 92. The slider is hidden for PNG, which has no quality setting.

Cropping a JPEG and saving it as a JPEG compresses the picture once more, so a little quality is lost each time you do it. Keep your original and crop from that, and choose PNG if you will edit the result again.

What the tool does with your picture

  • The phone's rotation tag is applied first, so the picture you see is the picture you crop. See our EXIF guide for what that tag is.
  • Metadata is not kept. The saved file is a new picture, so camera details and GPS location from the original are left behind.
  • Large pictures work at full size. The picture is shown scaled to fit the page, but the crop and the saved file use the original pixels.
  • One picture at a time. Press Another picture for the next one. To crop many pictures to the same shape, the bulk image resizer keeps the interesting part of each picture automatically and lets you adjust any of them.
  • Size limit. Browsers will not make a picture larger than about 120 megapixels.

Crop or resize?

Cropping removes part of the picture and keeps the pixels of the rest. Resizing keeps the whole picture and changes how many pixels it has. For training images, a common routine is to crop out the clutter first, then resize every image to one size. Our guide on image size and count for LoRA training explains why, and the dataset workflow guide shows where cropping fits.

Privacy

The picture is cropped inside this tab, and the file on your disk is never changed or deleted. For what the site collects, see our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a picture to a square?

Add the picture, choose Square, 1 : 1 under Shape of the box, move and resize the box until it covers the part you want, and press Save the cropped picture.

How do I crop to an exact size like 1080 × 1080?

Type 1080 in Width and 1080 in Height under Exact box, then drag the box or type its Left and Top to place it. The tool saves exactly the pixels inside the box. If your picture is smaller than that, crop to the ratio instead and enlarge it with the image resizer.

How do I make a round picture?

Choose Circle (round picture) in the shape list, place the circle, and save. The result is a PNG with see-through corners.

Does cropping lower the quality?

The pixels inside the box are copied as they are. If you save as JPEG or WebP, the picture is compressed again, which loses a little quality. Choose PNG for no loss, and keep your original.

Can I crop several pictures at once?

This page does one picture at a time. For a whole folder at one size, with an automatic crop and the option to fix any single picture by hand, use the bulk image resizer.

Why is the saved picture bigger than it looks on screen?

The page shows large pictures scaled down to fit. The box and the saved file use the original pixels, and the line under the picture says how many you are keeping.
