"Smaller" means three different things
Most size problems come from mixing these up. A picture can be made smaller in three ways, and each fixes a different problem:
| Make it… | What changes | Fixes | Tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fewer pixels | The width and height | A picture that is too big for a page, a form or a model's input size | Resize Image, Bulk Image Resizer |
| Fewer bytes | How hard the file is compressed, at the same pixel size | "File too large" on an upload form, slow pages, full storage | Image Compressor |
| A different type | The file format | A program that will not open HEIC or WebP, a need for transparency, a smaller file for the same look | Image Converter |
A picture 4,000 pixels wide is almost never needed on a web page, so resizing helps far more than squeezing the quality. To fit a limit such as 100 KB, the compressor can do both: it looks for the highest quality that fits, never goes below quality 30, and only if that is not enough does it make the picture 15 percent smaller at a time, up to ten times, and says so. In our tests, a 766 KB photo JPEG became 228 KB at quality 75, a 1.2 MB photo PNG became 357 KB with 256 colors, and a 581 KB flat-color PNG became 163 KB. Photographs with fine texture shrink less than smooth pictures.
Which file type?
| Type | Good for | Not good for |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photographs, small files, email and the widest compatibility | Transparency, sharp text and logos (they smear) |
| PNG | Logos, screenshots and drawings with sharp edges, and transparency | Big photographs (large files) |
| WebP | Web pages: smaller than JPG or PNG for the same look, with transparency | Older programs and some upload forms |
| SVG | Logos and icons that must stay sharp at any size | Photographs (the file is bigger than the JPG) |
| Pages to share, print or send as one file | Editing the pictures later |
Our guides go further: PNG, JPG and WebP compared and HEIC versus JPEG. HEIC is the iPhone's photo format: Safari opens it itself, and in other browsers the converter loads a small open-source decoder (about 3 MB) the first time you add one.
What order to do things in
- Rotate and crop first (see the image editor tools), so you do not process pixels you will throw away.
- Resize to the final pixel size. If the picture must grow, use the upscaler instead, which adds detail rather than only stretching.
- Compress or convert last, once. JPG and WebP lose a little each time they are saved, so go straight to the final type and quality instead of saving in between.
- Make the PDF or the favicon set from the finished pictures.
Folders, ZIPs and your originals
The resizer, compressor and converter work on a whole folder: drop many pictures, set the options once, and download the results one by one or as a ZIP. Image to PDF takes many pictures into one PDF, and PDF to JPG saves the pages you choose as pictures, one by one or as a ZIP. The Bulk Image Resizer can also save straight into a folder on computers whose browser allows it. Nothing here changes or deletes the file on your disk: results are always new files. If you are preparing images for model training, see the image size and count guide for the sizes that matter.
Limits to know about
- The upscaler adds believable detail, not true detail. A small model (4.6 MB for photos, 2.4 MB for anime and drawings) draws it; letters on a sign or the shape of a small face can come out different from the original, so do not use it where the exact content matters.
- Converting to a type with fewer features loses something. JPG has no transparency, so see-through areas are filled with a color.
- Image to SVG is for flat pictures. A traced photograph becomes a poster-like picture or a very large file.
- Reading text works best on clean, straight, high-contrast text. Photographs of paper and handwriting are harder, and the page shows the numbers.
- Very large pictures hit a memory limit in the browser. Each tool says which, and refuses with a message rather than failing silently.
Where the work happens
All of these run in your browser tab. Tools with a model (the upscaler) or a decoder (HEIC, PDF, text reading) download it once and your browser keeps it. For what this site collects and keeps, see our privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make an image smaller in file size?
Use the Image Compressor: choose a quality, or a target size such as 100 KB, and it finds the best quality that fits. If the picture is also much larger than you need, resize it first with Resize Image, because fewer pixels shrink a file far more than lower quality does.
How do I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?
Use HEIC to JPG (or HEIC to PNG). Drop the photos in and download JPG files. It works on a whole folder at once.
What is the difference between resizing and compressing?
Resizing changes the width and height of the picture (fewer pixels). Compressing keeps the pixel size and makes the file smaller by saving it at a lower quality. Resizing is usually the bigger win for pictures that are far larger than needed.
Will converting reduce the quality?
Converting to JPG or WebP always compresses a little, so choose a high quality and convert only once. PNG is lossless. Going to a type without transparency fills see-through areas with a color.
Can I resize many pictures at once?
Yes. The Resize Image tool takes a folder and sets one rule for all of it. For an exact size with a smart crop, use the Bulk Image Resizer, which can also add a border, a watermark and a rename pattern.
Is a SVG better than a PNG?
For a logo or an icon that must stay sharp at any size, yes. For a photograph, no: a traced photograph is a poster-like picture or a very large file. See Image to SVG for measured examples.
Are my pictures uploaded to be converted?
