PNG to JPG converter

Turn PNG pictures into JPG files, one or a whole folder at a time. Choose the quality and what goes behind see-through areas, see the old and new size of every file, and download them one by one or as a ZIP.

How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Add your PNG files. Drop them anywhere on the page, or click the box and choose them. You can add a whole folder's worth at once.
  2. Check the two settings. Quality starts at 92. Behind see-through areas starts at white and matters only for PNGs with transparency.
  3. Press Convert. Each row shows the PNG size and the JPG size when it is done.
  4. Download with the link on a row, or use Download all as ZIP for several files.

Each result keeps the original name with a new ending, so holiday.png becomes holiday.jpg. Your PNG files are never changed or removed. If you change a setting after converting, the finished files are cleared and you press Convert again, because they no longer match the settings.

Will the file really get smaller?

That depends on what the PNG shows, and it is the most important thing to know before you convert. We tested our converter on three pictures:

PNGJPG, quality 92JPG, quality 80
A 1024 × 768 photograph1,263 KB153 KB115 KB
A 1024 × 768 screenshot-style picture (flat colors and text)93 KB123 KB92 KB
A 600 × 400 logo13 KB17 KB12 KB

The photograph became about eight times smaller. The screenshot and the logo got bigger at the default quality, and only matched their PNG size at 80, where JPG's blurring around sharp edges starts to show. The reason is how the two formats work: PNG keeps every pixel and is very efficient for flat colors and crisp lines, and JPG was designed for the smooth shading of photographs. Our guide PNG vs JPG vs WebP explains it in more detail.

The rule of thumb: convert photographs, leave screenshots, diagrams, logos and line art as PNG. The size shown on each row tells you at once which kind you have.

What happens to see-through areas

JPG cannot be see-through, so the transparent parts of a PNG have to be filled with a color. Under Behind see-through areas choose white, black or any color you like. Half-transparent pixels, such as the soft edge of a shadow, blend into that color: in our test a half-transparent orange over white came out as the light orange you would expect. Pick the color of the page the picture will be shown on, and the edges will look right.

If you need to keep the transparency, do not convert to JPG. Keep the PNG, or save a WebP with the image converter, which keeps see-through areas in a smaller file.

Choosing the quality

The slider runs from 50 (smallest file, visible loss) to 100 (largest). We start at 92 because it keeps most of the saving without obvious damage. We compared our JPG with the original PNG pixel by pixel on the test photograph: at quality 92 the score was 44.6 dB (PSNR, where higher means closer to the original), and the worst single pixel was off by 30 levels out of 255. At quality 80 the score was 39.7 dB and the worst pixel was off by 44. Quality 100 is not worth it: on the same photograph it was 358 KB against 153 KB at 92.

  • 90 to 95: photographs you care about, or pictures you may print.
  • 80 to 85: pictures for web pages and messages, where size matters more.
  • Below 70: only for small thumbnails. Blocky patches and speckles appear around edges.

If the JPG is still bigger than you want, shrink the pixels with the image resizer or run the result through the image compressor.

What is kept and what is not

  • Pixel size. The picture keeps its full width and height.
  • Hidden text. The new file is a fresh picture, so text hidden inside the PNG is left behind. Pictures made by image generators often carry their prompt and settings that way (see reading the prompt in a picture). If you need to keep that information, do not use this page. If you want to look at it first, use the metadata viewer.
  • Color depth. A 16-bit PNG is saved with 8 bits per color, which is what JPG uses.
  • Animation. An animated PNG (APNG) becomes a still picture: only its first frame is converted. We tested this with a three-frame APNG.
  • Color profiles. An embedded color profile is not carried over, so pictures in a wide-gamut space can look slightly different.

Limits

  • Browsers will not draw a picture wider than 16,384 pixels or larger than about 120 megapixels, so a huge PNG may not convert.
  • Every finished picture is held in memory until you download it, so do very large folders in groups, especially on a phone.
  • Converting is a one-way step: you cannot get the exact pixels of the PNG back from the JPG. Keep your originals.

Other conversions

Going the other way? See JPG to PNG. Got a .webp file from a website? Use WebP to JPG. iPhone photos are on HEIC to JPG, and the image converter reads many more types and also saves WebP.

Privacy

The conversion happens in this tab, and the files on your disk are never changed or deleted. For what the site collects, see our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG for free?

Drop your PNG files on this page, check the quality and the background color, and press Convert. Then download each file or the whole batch as a ZIP. Nothing needs to be installed.

Why is my JPG bigger than the PNG?

Because the picture is probably a screenshot, a logo or a drawing. PNG stores flat colors and sharp lines very efficiently, and JPG does not. In our test a screenshot grew from 93 KB to 123 KB at quality 92. Keep such pictures as PNG, or lower the quality to about 80 if you must use JPG.

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?

Yes, a little, because JPG is a lossy format. At the default quality of 92 the differences are small on a photograph, but a few pixels, usually on edges, change by more. The PNG is not touched, so you can always convert again with a different setting.

What happens to a transparent PNG?

JPG cannot be see-through, so the transparent areas are filled with the color you choose under Behind see-through areas: white, black or any color. To keep the transparency, leave the file as a PNG or save it as a WebP.

Can I convert many PNG files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and press Convert once. Download them one by one or all together as a ZIP. Every finished picture is held in memory until you download it, so very large folders are better done in groups.

Does the JPG keep the prompt or other information stored in the PNG?

No. The JPG is a fresh picture, so text stored inside the PNG, such as the prompt that an image generator writes into its files, is not copied.
