How to convert pictures

  1. Add your pictures. Drop one or many anywhere on the page, paste one, or click the box to choose files. You can mix types in one batch.
  2. Choose the type you want: JPG, PNG or WebP.
  3. Press Convert. Each row shows the old type, the new type, and the file sizes before and after.
  4. Download. Use the link on a row, or Download all as ZIP for a batch.

Changing a setting after converting clears the finished files, because they no longer match, and you press Convert again. Your original files are never changed, and each result keeps the original name with the new extension, for example IMG_2041.heic becomes IMG_2041.jpg.

What it can read, and what it can save

ReadsNotes
HEIC and HEIFiPhone and iPad photos. See the next section.
JPEG, PNG, WebPAlways supported.
GIFOnly the first frame is used, so an animation becomes a still picture.
BMP and AVIFIf your browser can open them, which current browsers can.
SVGVector graphics are turned into a picture of pixels. A small SVG is drawn with its longest side at 1024 pixels so that it stays sharp; a larger one keeps its own size.

It saves JPG (small files, no transparency), PNG (lossless, keeps transparency) and WebP (usually the smallest, keeps transparency).

Converting HEIC photos

HEIC (or HEIF) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default. It stores the same picture in a smaller file than JPEG, but many websites, Windows programs and older apps cannot open it. Converting to JPG makes the photo work everywhere.

  • Safari can open HEIC on its own, so there it needs nothing extra.
  • Other browsers cannot. The first time you add a HEIC file in one of them, the page downloads a decoder of about 3 MB, and only then. It is libheif, an open-source HEIC library (LGPL-3.0), compiled for the browser and packaged as heic-to. If you never add a HEIC file, it is never downloaded.
  • The colors come out right. We compared the decoder with macOS and with a current libheif on HEIC files made by Apple software, and the results agreed to within about one level out of 255. An older HEIC decoder we tried first was off by six to ten levels and clipped highlights, so we did not use it.
  • The picture is compressed only once. The HEIC is decoded without loss, and only the final JPG, PNG or WebP step compresses it.
  • One picture per file. If a HEIC file holds several images, such as a burst, the first is used. The video part of a Live Photo is not converted.

If HEIC is all you need, our HEIC to JPG converter is a simpler page for exactly that, and the HEIC vs JPEG guide explains the differences between the two formats.

To avoid HEIC in the first place, an iPhone can save JPEG instead. In Settings β†’ Camera β†’ Formats, choose Most Compatible; High Efficiency is the default, according to Apple's guide to HEIF and HEVC media. The photos then take more space, but open everywhere.

Quality, transparency and color

  • Quality (for JPG and WebP) runs from 50 to 100 and starts at 92. Lower is smaller, higher looks better. PNG is lossless and has no quality setting.
  • See-through areas need a color when you save a JPG, because JPG cannot be transparent. Choose white, black or any color. PNG and WebP keep the transparency.
  • PNG to PNG and similar conversions are exact for the pixels. Going to JPG or WebP changes the pixels slightly because those types compress with some loss, so keep your originals.
  • Color profiles from the original, such as the wide-gamut Display P3 profile on iPhones, are not carried over, so very saturated colors can look slightly different.

Which type should I choose?

You wantChoose
A photo that opens everywhereJPG
A logo, screenshot or drawing with sharp edges, or anything you will edit againPNG
Transparency in a small file, for the webWebP or PNG
The smallest file for a photo on a modern siteWebP (or JPG at a lower quality)

If a converted file is bigger than you want, the image compressor can make it smaller, and the image resizer can reduce its pixel size.

Metadata and privacy

  • Metadata is not kept. The saved files are fresh drawings, so camera details and the GPS location stored in iPhone photos are left behind. The phone rotation tag is applied first, so pictures keep looking upright. See our EXIF guide.
  • The conversion happens in this tab. The files on your disk are never changed or deleted. For what the site collects, see our privacy policy.

Limits

  • Browsers will not draw a picture wider than 16,384 pixels or larger than about 120 megapixels, so a huge picture may not convert.
  • Every finished picture is held in memory until you download it, so do very large folders in groups, especially on a phone.
  • RAW camera files and PSD files are not supported.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

Add your HEIC photos, leave Convert to on JPG, and press Convert. Then download each file or the whole batch as a ZIP. Nothing needs to be installed.

Why are my iPhone photos HEIC?

Because High Efficiency is the default camera format on iPhones that support it. It makes smaller files, but not every program can open them. You can switch the camera to Most Compatible to save JPEG instead, or convert HEIC files with this page.

Will the converted photo look the same?

Very nearly. In our tests the converted colors matched a current libheif decode to within about one level out of 255. JPG and WebP compress with some loss, so use a high quality for photos you care about, and keep the originals.

Can I convert PNG to JPG without a white background?

JPG cannot be see-through, so something has to fill the transparent areas. Choose white, black or a color under Behind see-through areas. To keep the transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Does it work with animated GIFs?

Only the first frame is converted, so the result is a still picture. The tool does not create or save animations.

Why did the first HEIC file take longer?

Browsers other than Safari need a small decoder program to read HEIC, about 3 MB, and the page downloads it the first time you add a HEIC file. After that it is ready for the rest of your session.
